Common Moving Issues

For many people, moving is a daunting experience. Without proper planning and management, a move can quickly spiral out of control into a cautionary tale of ‘what not to do’. Whether you are moving into your first new home or you are a seasoned mover and shaker, mistakes and setbacks come up. Learning to expect and preparing for possible problems can help prevent extra costs, property damage, personal injury, and monster headaches. It is important to keep in mind that every move will have its own unique challenges, so it is important to stay flexible and have an open mind to what you might face. To help give you a running head start on preparing for your move, here are some common issues that people face

Not getting what you think you are getting

Landlords, real estate brokers, builders, and stagers all have one goal in mind: sell, sell, sell! Homes will always look prettier before you move in and it is important to know exactly what you are getting before you sign any papers. Ask questions about what kind of amenities and utilities might be included in the price of your possible new home. If possible, test the faucets and shower heads for proper water pressure and inspect the electrical outlets to make sure everything works properly – no one wants to move into a new home and find out that half the lights do not work and the boiler needs replacing. Take a tour of the neighbourhood and get to know your surroundings – hopefully, your dream home is not directly on a major commercial jet flight route! Get in touch with a previous tenant (if applicable) and ask about any issues, and make sure you are buying or renting your home from a respectable, trustworthy source.

Lost or damaged property

Moving often devolves into a mess of boxes and stray items. If you do not keep track of what is going where; a box or two might just end up getting left behind. If you are hiring Toronto movers, get to know them and make sure you can trust them with your belongings. Make lists and double check that all your belongings are accounted for before, during, and after your move. Make sure to pack and secure valuables and fragile items well, and always remember that heavy items on the bottom!

Delays in transit

This is an especially challenging problem for long distance movers, for example between Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver. Imagine arriving at your new home on the other side of the country only to get a call from the movers explaining that your belongings are still four and a half states away and will not get to your new home for another week. Again it is important to know who you are moving with – pick a moving company with a good reputation by checking reviews and personal testimonies from third parties. If possible, split your belongings and personally bring essentials with you on your move so that if needed, you can live off of what you have brought until the rest of your belongings arrive.

Too much stuff/too little space

It is easy to overestimate the amount of storage space in your new home and underestimate the amount of clutter you are hauling over with you. Moving happens to be a great time to do some spring cleaning and get rid of old items that you do not really need anymore.

It happens to the best of us. Small box? No problem, until you realise it is filled with your great grandfather’s prized rock collection. Always, always lift with your legs, not your back, and know the limits of what you can lift. Cuts and scrapes are bound to happen in the thick of things while everyone is rushing to unload furniture so they can go on their lunch break.

Common Door Lock Problems and Solutions

We don’t always pay attention to door locks, and when we do, it’s usually because there’s a problem with them. Door locks are essential for maintaining security in your own home. If you’ve purchased one that does not work well, you might not have the confidence to leave the house unmanned.

It may look so easy to repair a door lock, but it is actually made up of several tiny moving parts which are very complicated to deal with. To fix your door lock, you need to identify the root of the problem first. Here are the common door lock problems and their corresponding solutions:

  • Frozen Lock

Door locks are made of metal. They absorb cold as much as they absorb heat. During cold weathers, it is likely for a lock to be frozen due to the low, cold temperature. The ideal way to defrost a lock is to use a heated key. Place the key on top of a radiator or dip it into a bowl of hot or boiling water. Use a heat resistant pair of gloves to hold the heated key and insert it into the lock. Make sure you have patted the key dry with a clean cloth before inserting it to the keyhole.

  • Lock malfunction caused by weather stripping

Weather stripping can be useful, but it can also sometimes cause misalignment of door and malfunction of the door lock. When the weather stripping begins to cause lock malfunction, remove the stripping from its place and reposition it to the back of the door frame.

  • Door latch doesn’t catch shut

The latch won’t usually catch shut when the bolt and the strike plate are not aligned. For minor misalignment, file down the latch plate where it catches the latch. However, when the problem is that the mortise is not deep enough for the lock to effectively work, you will need to unscrew the strike plate to reposition it.

  • Seized up lock

You inserted the key into the lock, but it won’t turn – your door lock has seized up. Seized up lock is usually caused by dirt or grime stuck inside the mechanism of the lock. To clean the door lock mechanism, use a damp cotton swab and insert it into the keyhole. Jiggle the cotton swab around the keyhole to attract dirt. Seized up lock may also need lubrication. To lubricate, use a silicone spray or purpose-made graphite, instead of using oil.  After applying, insert the key into the keyhole and wiggle it in the lock to evenly distribute the lubricant.

  • Door lock turns, but the lock bolt doesn’t operate

In the previous situation, the key can be inserted into the lock, but it won’t turn. In this problem, the door lock turns, but the lock bolt doesn’t operate. Here, the problem is in the mechanism itself. Remove the lock and examine the possible problem. If the problem is serious, just replace the entire lock, or you can call for an emergency locksmith service.
